The C-Section

A Caesarian Section (often called the C-Sect) is a surgical method of delivering a baby. It is a major abdominal surgery that is all too frequently downplayed by exhausted new parents. It can cause postural inhibition, muscular discomfort and the 'tummy apron' that many Mums get after surgery. It should not be underestimated - a C-Section is common but it ideally requires an empathic and systematic approach to recovery....

How Do You Recover From a C-Section? 

...With time, care, good nutrition, gentle recovery movement and a systemised, incremental approach to fitness gains.....not with bootcamp, running or high impact classes....certainly not in those early days. 

The first 8-12 weeks post-op should be focused on healing rather than sweating....resting as much as possible (yes, yes, I know the challenges with a small baby but you have to try....), connecting with your pelvic floor, massaging the scar, fuelling your body with the best possible protein and nutrient dense foods to give it a chance to recover well. 

SO SO SO many women just 'get on with it' after a C-Section - and I get that, I get the necessity of that. They say 'it's just a c-section..' and then I see them at bootcamp a few weeks after having the procedure.

But....I have met clients who, weeks/months/years down the line, have been living with the postural and internal side-effects of not having given themselves time to restore...the 'tummy apron'...an inability to stand properly because their scar is so tight...hating their tummy...lack of sensitivity in and around the scar area...a constant 'pulling' sensation....lower back pain...they may have a diastasis as well - perhaps stress incontinence too.

That's not ok. Those things (and more) affect how a woman is able to move, breathe and ultimately affects her confidence....thats not why we have children - to feel less than wonderful. 

You matter.

Imagine a sportswoman. Imagine she badly twists her ankle on a long run and even perhaps needs an operation...would you see her at a High Intensity Fat Burning Class 8 weeks after her operation? Or would you see her visiting a physiotherapist, doing remedial exercises, progressively increasing her body's ability in movement until she is back on top form...????

Now imagine yourself. Only your sport is growing humans. It can take up to 2 years for human tissue to fully restrengthen after traumatic injury..... I offer The C-Section Recovery Programme as a complete 1-2-1 package. Every woman is so individual that the early recovery demands a bespoke approach so that your needs are completely accounted for. 

Recovery cannot be achieved in one session and so a systemised approach over 6-8 weeks allows you to make the gradual changes needed for you to feel and see a difference in your body. 

As a private, 1-2-1 client, you can be guaranteed of the 5-star treatment and your Recovery Programme will include everything that you need to start feeling strong, connected and confident:

Your C-Section Recovery Journey

The starting point for your C-Section Recovery Journey is the Discovery Call where we can talk candidly on the telephone about your postnatal challenges and how I may help you. 

To fully restore and recover from your c-section (& diastasis if you have one) takes time, focus and effort. I put my all into helping you achieve your goals and as such, I love to work with Mums who are absolutely committed to their recovery. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the looks of joy and watching a woman grow in confidence as her body starts to become hers again, after giving so much to her babies. 

We will then schedule a time to discuss your detailed pre-screening postnatal health questionnaire that you complete online. This allows me to qualify us both to work with each other (if you have symptoms that are out of scope for me at that time, I will signpost you to a more appropriate practitioner) and understand what has been happening for you ahead of our first appointment so that our time together is used effectively.

We will then schedule a 1-2-1 appointment so that we can go through your questionnaire in more depth and I will ask you to complete some simple functional tasks to assess how you are moving. During the assessment, I will get 'hands-on' to assess where you are at....I find out where are you stuck in your body by looking at whether you breathe effectively....are you tender in specific areas? 

I will conduct a check of your tummy to establish where you are with your c-section (& your diastasis if relevant). We will talk about nutrition, lifestyle, self care and look at your mindset....how can we set the conditions for your success so that you really stick to the plan and enjoy your successes as you progress through the programme.

This assessment then forms the basis of your BESPOKE recovery programme.

I insist you have at least one postnatal recovery massage (by me!) before starting a C-Section & Diastasis Recovery programme because quite simply, the programme works better with it! If you help the body to release the areas that are 'stuck', you allow it to start to function how it should and therefore enhance the healing process. Without it, you are likely to be using the wrong muscles, breathing ineffectively, and honestly; you won't be getting your money's worth. ​

We will then schedule the first of your three  1-2-1 appointments where we focus in on movement and exercises that will really help to improve your posture and strengthen your deepest core muscles at the same time as reconnecting and restoring your vulnerable tummy muscles. 

To make sure you are on track, I will check in with you between sessions in a method of your choice to make sure you are feeling confident about your programme and are making progress. I will also be available to you daily to ask me any questions you may have.

When your Recovery programme is finished, we will reassess your movement and tummy - and from there will discuss whether continuation sessions are appropriate or whether you might like to go join another of my postnatal offerings to continue your amazing journey back to you!
